County Health Nurse " Makes Fine Report The report of the Clackamas coun ty Public Health nurse for October, iNovember and December, 1921, are as oiiows : The plan for the three months' demonstration or education work ot tne county health nurse in Clackamas county, was divided into three classes, a general nursing service, social ser vice and a school service. The general nursing service has in cluded instructive and home nursing; this can best be described by a con crete case which is fairly typical. The nurse was recently called into the home of a man who had been out of work for some time and was not tinancially prepared to meet the ex penses of the arrival"of a new baby, there were four small children in tris family, wihen the nurse visited the home. She found an aunt, a well- meaning woman, with little knowledge of nursing, had come to help out for a week, although the aunt had several children of her own. She had always heard that in preparing a baby's food the value of the milk was destroyed by boiling; that milk thinned a little and warmed a thriving baby; that a baby should be fed when it cried and that if it did not stop crying it should be agitated by rocking or shaking. She was however easily convinced that cereal water in the milk was a substitute for what might be boiled out; that continued irregular feedings would spoil a baby's appetite and over night the sensitive stomach; and that in carefully proportioned food a baby was much more apt to get the amount required. The point to be made is this : If the aunt had not proved responsible for the baby's and mother's care, the nurse would have had it to do until some competent person could have been found. This baby was given a layette and the sick room supplies were loaned from the association loan closet. Visits are still being made to this family. During the three months 20 patients were carried, 11 nursing visits made, 44 instructive visits. Social Service, Lacking social agencies it is neces sary in this county for individuals or societies to do their own investigat ing. Because of the acute relation of ec onomics to health, it is essential in considering public health, careful thought be given to the family in come. For instance, a few years ago, a poor Finn came to Oregon. He hao had no special training or education and today speaks very little English, He could demand only hard, manual labor. A great deal of the time his work was shifting logs in the river, where he was of course exposed to the wet and cold. Babies -came so fast and realizing that he had little money for advancement or suitable clothes for his outdoor work, he went to the pulp department of the mills, which is said not. to be conductive to healthy lungs. About four years ago he began to complain of general pains and severe coughing spells. The neighborhood developed the impression that he was lazy, because a great deal of the time he was not able to support his fam ily. When this family was brought to the attention of the association, the mother was expecting another baby, a child of 18 months had a broken rib, the 11 year old boy had frequent ill nesses, similar to his father's; two children had impetigo; the father was suffering from his old complaint. Aside from the living earned by the mothers going out to wash, the sole income of the family was a monthly pension of $15 from the county to support a fam ily of five -children, two in Bchool, three under five at home, and a sick father. The reason given for the meagerness of the 'pension was that the family owned the house. Upon investigation it was learned from the agent that the house was valued at $1000, that they owed $800 on it and were pay ing 8 per cent on their investment. Two physicians who cared for the family approved of the suggestion that the father and boy of 11 be taken to the" Portland free dispensary for com plete physical , examination. Two trips to the dispensary proved that the boy was organically fit, hut was suffering from extreme malnutrition; his resistance was so low that expos ure or fatigue almost invariably meant i rise in temperature, coughing, a cold or upset stomach. The physician or lered that he remain out of school in definitely, spend a great deal of time 'n bed; eat a variety of vegetables, Plenty of milk, cream and butte. The diagnosis for the father was chronic, respiratory infection, a pre sent non tubercular, incapacitated for work. On application to the county court with a report of the investigation the tension was increased to $25 monthly, he story told to a kind neighbor who 'old another brought them a bag of carrots, a quart of milk daily for two nonths, clothes and innumerable don ations of food from other sources. Under the head of social service 149 calls were made. School Service. School service includes: 1. School building inspection. 2. Calls at the home of school chil dren. 3. Advice to children and mothers. 4. A routine physical inspection of schoSl children, observing their pos ture, skin, nose and throat, testing their vision and hearing. Incorrect posture is a very common defect and often indicative of chest or spine disorder. 1020 children were inspected for communicable diseases; 60 were ex cluded. Routine physical inspection was giv n 384 children. 360 or over 94 per cent of these chil dren had defective teeth, many of them permanent 101 had abnormal tonsils. 24 had defective breathing. 41 had defective vision and 40 de fective hearing. A form letter was sent to each par ent who received a notice of a phy sical defect of his child. Teachers have been especially help ful in school work. In. their efforts to have defects corrected in teaching children habits of healthy living ,they have been especially helpful. Many teachers have weighed their own school children. 747 children in the county have been weighed and measured. 487 were found to be under average normal weight. Respectfully submitted, HILDA MORRIS, Clackamas County Pub. Health Nurse. Life in Far East Told by Workers "We went along a barren way, ev ery village telling , us that the inhab itants -had been driven away and that the invaders had left only destitution. Now and then daring men who had re turned to their wasted homes had till ed a little soil and were gathering a meager crop. It was threshing time Pa a mo si d n when we were there and in the sparse ly covered fields little children gath ered up every neglected head of grain carrying it with almost worshipful care to the little pile of wheat for winter's bread. "In Erivan we saw dead upon the streets and poverty indescribable everywhere. About our train, in the little old park of the city, everywhere, were the refugees. These poor fam ished human f jihgs, or rather living skeletons, do little more than raise their bony hands and feebly cry for bread. In the cemetery we saw a dying mother with a little child by her side. She had dragged herself to the city of the dead to die. "We were about to leave the city when some of us returned to the or phanages and saw more than one hun dred children who had come from no one knows where and were literally knocking at the orphanage door for entrance. Boys and girls, children who ought to be happy, whose fathers and mothers had been killed, at an or phanage door and there was no room within." E. W. HANSACKER, Far-East Relief Worker. COULD NOT FEED HB1SELF "I suffered with rheumatism and in digestion and at times could not use my arms to feed myself," said Wes ley Royal, Augusta, Ga. "1 tried numerous medicines with only tem porary relief," he - continued, "until I was advised to try Number 40 Pre scription which I did with splendid results. I cheerfully recommend it to anyone suffering from any blood liver or stomach trouble, or general bad health." Number 40 Prescription is recom mended for blood troubles from any cause, chronic constipation, indiges tion, stomach and liver trouble, ecze ma, skin troubles, etc. Acts on the liver removing waste matters from the system thus cleansing the blood of all impurities and doing away with the need of cathartic pills and tablets.
